Preventing children from getting separated from their family

In India there is a huge cultural problem with institutionalised care. More often than not, children are placed in homes, simply because of poverty. The parents are willing and able to care for their children, but struggle to meet their needs and so believe they are doing the right thing. And so we are on a mission to ensure that poverty is never a reason for a child to be separated from their family.

Day care

We are partnering with some pioneering new day care centers, focussed on providing high-quality, day time care for children in poverty, so that parents are able to work while children are kept safe, along with holistic, wrap-around community-based support for the entire family.

Without this programme the children would be at risk by being left alone in the slum communities until after dark when their parents return from work. The risks are not only around their loneliness and general safety, but the vulnerability to trafficking, substance misuse and other forms of major harm.

Because of the Day Care Project, the children get extra educational opportunities, counselling support, healthy food and the chance to develop new friendships and skills. Parents and caregivers are able to work to provide for their families knowing their children are not only safe, but truly looked after.

School scholarships

Our partner in Kolkata runs an amazing school that makes education accessible to so many in the local community with much lower tuition fees than elsewhere. However, for the poorest families the school fees can still be a barrier to their children getting an education, so we are thrilled to be subsidising a small number of places for children that would otherwise not be able to afford it.

For around £40/month a child can be given a great education which will open opportunities for them in the future.
