Young people

Giving young adults a RAMP towards a brighter future.

Young people are brilliant

They’re full of potential, they’re the hope for the future of their communities, and yet there’s very little support for the 18-25 age group in Kolkata. Let’s fix that…

A RAMP for change

In spite of years of incredible investment and support, young adults raised in residential care often go out in the real world with few options, and end up back in the cycle of poverty.

That’s why we’ve worked with a local partner to develop RAMP: our mentoring programme that helps young people transition into life as a fully independent, self-sufficient adult.

This is how we do it

Education
Whether through further studies or vocational training, we want our young people to have the opportunity to become more employable and fulfil their potential.
Life Skills
We teach young people skills they’ll need for everyday life, such as budgeting, paying bills and taking care of their health.
Mentoring
Our amazing mentors provide counselling and emotional support – helping our young people to process what they’ve been through and mentally prepare for independent life.

INDIVIDUAL HELP, FOR EACH INDIVIDUAL

One-size-fits-all is not a thing. We recognise that every young person has their own needs, history, personality, skills and resources, which means we tailor RAMP to each individual so they can really flourish and take on the world, their way.

A HELPING HAND, NOT A HAND OUT

We never cover 100% of a young person’s expenses. Instead, our mentors help each member of RAMP to get a part-time job, and gradually take on more and more of their own costs so that, by the time they leave RAMP, they don’t have to worry about being thrown in the deep end with no idea how to float – they’ve been learning to swim all along.

STRONG, CONFIDENT, INDEPENDENT

Our mentors guide our young people towards independent living, so that they have the knowledge and skills they need to stand on their own two feet and take care of themselves, all by themselves.

But that doesn’t mean they go it alone: once a young person is self-sufficient, they often pay it forward and support their families and wider communities. We might deeply invest in one individual, but that investment has a ripple effect that impacts the lives of so many more.
